about

UTAZATA Ensemble presents songs from Japanese Gagaku, as well as Japanese ritual and folk music. With the ensemble’s free improvisational approach to the selected materials, the music explores the possibility of a radical and modernistic revival of the songs from centuries ago.

These songs were originally performed with rather unique musical understanding with scarcely any European influence. In that spirit, instead of analyzing these songs from a western perspective, Rema and the ensemble are trying to understand this music outside of the twelve tone system and of western analysis. The performances commune both with the traditions of our time, and of those long ago. Using long-cultivated improvisational intuition, Utazata trys to reach beyond, arriving at a new sound, with respect and the spirit of peace.
